You, Me and Dupree (2006)

Posted October 3rd by Greg

[Movie 261 / Day 276]

Carl (Matt Dillon) and Molly (Kate Hudson) are happy newly weds when Carl offers a roof over the head of his best friend and best man, Dupree (Owen Wilson). As a batchelor, Dupree has some bad habits which aren’t conducive to happy families. Molly starts out disliking Dupree lots, and then suddenly changes her mind and flips over to spending lots of time with him. At the same time, Carl’s boss and father-in-law, Mr Thompson (Michael Douglas), is giving him more responsibility which makes him work long hours and simultaneously makes it quite clear he doesn’t like him stealing his precious daughter. All of this makes Carl break down, accuse Dupree of trying to steal Molly and then start a fight with Mr Thompson. Which he loses. He then walks out, leaving Dupree to figure out a way of bringing his best friend back together with the love of his life.

It’s rubbish. One of the most obvious movies I’ve ever seen, with literally every single shock comedy moment being telegraphed way before the pay off. The jokes aren’t funny. Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson have almost no screen-chemistry and seem horribly mismatched. The character of Mr Thompson seems to be aiming for shockingly funny (asking his son-in-law to get a vasectomy, for instance) but instead, it comes off as creepy and downright odd. It’s a terrible rom-com, lacking both rom and com, resulting in a big ball of boredom.

Avoid.
