[Movie 279 / Day 295]
Andie (Molly Ringwald) is a girl from a poor, single-parent family. Her best friend is Duckie (Jon Cryer), who has fallen in love with her. When she’s asked out by rich-boy Steff (James Spader), she snubs him; but when she’s asked out by rich-boy Blane, she accepts. Unfortunately, for their date, Blane takes her to a house party as Steff’s house which soon ends in her being ridiculed by the rich kids.
By this point in the movie, I had lost interest. I just couldn’t get into it and I couldn’t care less about the characters or what happened to them. In fact there was only one scene I actually liked enough to remember in any detail – and that’s the scene where Duckie mimes to Try A Little Tenderness.
Anyway, the upshot is Andie has to choose between Duckie and Blane. She chooses Blane but he succumbs to peer pressure and is nasty to her so she switches to Duckie. He realises that she really still likes Blane so she switches back again. It’s OK though, as, despite being head-over-heels in love with Andie a few minutes previously, Duckie cops off with some random girl.
Supposedly classic John Hughes, I found PRETTY IN PINK to be dull and not a patch on what I consider to be classic John Hughes (ie, THE BREAKFAST CLUB, FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF or WEIRD SCIENCE).
