My Best Friend’s Girl (2008)

[Movie 267 / Day 283]

Tank (Dane Cook) is a help-line operator for an air-conditioning firm. As a sideline, he charges desperate men to go on dates with their ex-girlfriends in order to give them the worst date of their life so they realise that the guy they just broke up with isn’t so bad after all. He shares an apartment with step cousin Dustin (Jason Biggs). Dustin is hopelessly in love with his girlfriend of five weeks, Alexis (Kate Hudson). When he tells her however, she thinks it’s all moving too fast and breaks it off. So Dustin, naturally, turns to his room-mate and best friend to push her back into his arms by means of a bad date.

The only problem with that plan is Alexis has decided she’s going to experience life a little and instead of being disgusted by Tank’s behaviour, gets steaming drunk and invites him in for sex. After making a quick getaway and receiving a phone call from a fuming Alexis the next day, Tank goes to see her and accidentally sleeps with her. From here on in, Tank and Alexis regularly meet for casual sex while poor old Dustin makes increasingly desperate attempts to win her heart.

Obviously, love is found in strange places, and before we know it, Tank and Alexis are falling for each other, leaving Dustin out in the cold.

My Best Friend’s Girl is an OK romcom but doesn’t manage to stand out in any way, despite desperately trying to by throwing in lots of swearing and crudity (which doesn’t seem to match the tone of the movie). There are one or two memorably funny moments, but that’s it. Watching it after watching the abysmal Bride Wars, however, makes it seem much better than it actually is! Maybe worth catching on TV, if you’re bored.
