Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009)

[Movie 252 / Day 265]

In this rehash of A Christmas Carol, Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey) is a famous fashion photographer who specialises in taking photos of women in their underwear. And then sleeping with them afterwards before dumping them. He has this attitude towards women thanks to his Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas), a Hugh Hefner-alike tasked with the job of raising Connor and his younger brother Paul (Breckin Meyer) after their parents died in a car crash. After feeling the sting of rejection from his first love Jenny (Jennifer Garner), Uncle Wayne shows Connor how to get the women into bed and how to escape afterwards and sets him off on a heart-breaking rampage.

Now, Paul is getting married and Connor, as Paul’s only remaining family, is invited to the wedding. He arrives at Uncle Wayne’s mansion in his shiny Jag, ready for a hedonistic weekend of booze and bridesmaids. After disgracing himself in various ways involving denouncing marriage and love, he is visited by the ghost of Uncle Wayne who tells him he’s headed for a lonely life and a lonely death. He’s consequently visited by the ghosts of girlfriends past, present and future who each show him the consequences of his current lifestyle. Obviously, it scares him enough to change his life and make him go tell Jenny how he feels about her.

Aaah.

It’s an average romcom with few stand out moments. Michael Douglas plays an old sleeze well. Everybody else is fine, nothing’s particularly irritating or pleasing. It’s just… average.
