[Movie 292 / Day 310]
Dick (Jim Carrey) and Jane Harper (Téa Leoni) are loving life. They live in a beautiful house and Dick has just had a promotion at work which means Jane can finally order a landscaped garden and a hottub.
Unfortunately for the happy couple, it turns out that Dick’s boss, Jack McCallister (Alec Baldwin) has been syphoning money away from the company, Globodyne, for all he’s worth, leaving behind a broken husk.
Suddenly, Dick is unemployed and penniless, his savings and pension both being tied up in Globodyne stock. Before long, the money they had left has gone and they are reduced to selling their possessions in order to live. That money soon runs out too and they are stuck in a house with negative equity (Globodyne being one of the area’s biggest employers) with a repossessed lawn.
Dick does the only thing he can think of, he grabs a toy gun and goes and robs a store. This leads on to a string of robberies by the married couple and before long, they’re back living the highlife once again. Then, a chance encounter with McCallister’s second in command, Frank Bascombe, gives them the opportunity to get their own back on McCallister and reclaim the $400 million he took from the company.
Cue a heist caper that goes predictably wrong before going predictably right.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t much to commend FUN WITH DICK AND JANE. The jokes are obvious and, for the most part, unfunny. The culmination of the heist is predictable in the extreme. The acting is average, as is the direction. There was, in fact, nothing to raise the movie above mediocrity. It should have been called TEDIUM WITH DICK AND JANE.
If you’re looking for a fun Jim Carrey flick, watch YES MAN instead.
