101 Dalmatians (1996)

[Movie 311 / Day 333] In this average live-action remake of the classic Disney cartoon, Jeff Daniels plays Roger, a struggling computer games designer who is unsuccessfully trying to market a game featuring his Dalmatian, Pongo. He bumps into fashion designer Anita (Joely Richardson) and her dog Purdy, and promptly fall in love. Before long, the dogs have a litter … Continue reading

Die Hard (1988)

[Movie 310 / Day 330] A much loved action movie in it’s own right, DIE HARD also qualifies as one of the best Christmas movies ever made, thanks to being set on Christmas Eve. As such, at this time of year, it’s almost the law that it should be watched, and as I’ve recently bought all four movies on bluray, … Continue reading

A Christmas Story (1983)

[Movie 309 / Day 330] Almost a decade after Bob Clarke had shocked audiences with the holiday horror BLACK CHRISTMAS, he took a break from writing and directing dick and fart jokes in the PORKY’S franchise to create a wonderful little story about a boy, Ralphie, that wants nothing more in the world for Christmas than to get his hands … Continue reading

How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (2008)

[Movie 308 / Day 327] A highly unlikeable man, Sidney Young (Simon Pegg), leaves his life in London when he gets the opportunity to fulfill his ambitions and go write for a glossy celebrity magazine in New York. Hoping he’s been hired for his rapier wit and knack for bursting the bubble of the rich and famous in print, he … Continue reading

Public Enemies (2009)

[Movie 307 / Day 326] Michael Mann’s telling of the story of notorious American gangster John Dillinger, for me, ended up being much less than the sum of its parts. I mean, a director like Mann and two of the biggest names in Hollywood in Johnny Depp and Christian Bale doing a movie about a gangster during the 30s? That’s … Continue reading

Camp Rock (2008)

[Movie 306 / Day 325] Poor girl accompanies her mother to Camp Rock, a summer camp for rich kids with ‘talent’, when her mother lands the job of camp cook. There, she lies in order to fit in with said rich kids, telling them her mother is an executive at some music TV channel they’ve never heard of. She falls … Continue reading

Fight Club (1999)

In 1999, two movies were released that blew me away. The first was THE MATRIX, which was quite unlike anything I’d seen before. It had the benefit of hype, having been built up for months before it’s eventual launch; particularly via a website whatisthematrix.com. The second movie that blew my mind was FIGHT CLUB. I went into the cinema utterly cold – I’d literally never heard of the movie before walking in and buying a ticket. And for nearly two and a half hours, I sat there utterly spellbound. Continue reading

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)

[Movie 304 / Day 324] The original ICE AGE was fun. It was the story of how an unlikely group of animals (a sloth, woolly mammoth, sabre toothed tiger) came to be friends and regard themselves as family. Unfortunately, ICE AGE 2: THE MELTDOWN wasn’t nearly as good. The humour seemed to go off the boil somewhat and, frankly, I … Continue reading
